I started
singing when I was about 5 years old in Church....... with my sisters.......
I
began singing in America as a little girl, along with my five sisters. I
was a soprano and hated that voice. I wanted to be an alto like my #2
sister. Needless to say, I did not seek a musical career in America.
Mostly because I felt Blacks were stero-typed as brainless entertainers. I
was gifted with a superior IQ and chose careers that challanged my ability to
think.
I
once won 2 fifths of wine and $25 singing "You Light Up My Life" in a
Rock'N'Roll Bar. Go figure. Either I was really great or they felt sorry for me.
The competition was awesome. The only time (in America) I sang as a career was
after this incident. I was asked to join a band called RAZ. I
thought "why not?" We did it for the money and it didn't last
very long. Everyone in the band was really into something else.
I
started singing in Finland as it was the only one (of five professions) I was
capable of doing due to the problem of language. I create posters,
newsletters and brochures for the bands. I also design the outfits I wear,
and lately I have made them myself... as well.
My
first act in Finland was called The Extasy Project.
It consisted of a guitar player, a DAT tape and me. We did revamped
versions of Disco and Rock covers. The music was Euro-Beat dance. I
have written several songs and for The Extasy Project, some have been
recorded.
Next,
I sang with the Multi-Cultural Center Band (Lahti,
Finland). In this band I was the lead (only) singer. We performed
for corporations and municipalities. Our song repertoire was Broadway,
Evergreens, and Jazz.
Then
came Solid Rock. It was an adult comtemporary rock
band (as the name implies). We did cover versions of 70's and 80's hits.
Tap
Jelly is the Blues
band.
Riverside
Rascals is the latest band I am performing with. They are a (Finnish)
New Orleans Jazz band.
